Wear Resistant Plastics for Bearing Type Applications

Bearing type applications often have severe wear in their materials. There are various applications associated such as slide assemblies, ball reversers, rolling element bearings, rods sliding through glands, rocker arms, telescopic booms, bushings, tracks, ball joints and thousands of other. All these applications are designed in such a way that they have one part sliding over other part. The energy dissipated and transmitted in bearing is directly proportional to the PV of the application. That is, as PV increases, heat transmitted and wear on the bearing surface also increases.

Plastic

There are various wear resistant plastic materials available in the market. Few of them are nylon, meldin, vespel, acetron, turcite, delrin, rulon, torlon, UHMW, tivar, and fluorosint 207. Large variety of wear resistant plastic materials is offered by the professional plastics. Many of them contain internal lubricants to eliminate or reduce the requirement of additional lubricant. Less heat and friction is generated by these parts thus, reducing its maintenance cost and also increasing life of parts. Requirements of plastics are that they must be able to withstand wear, high temperature, aggressive materials and load in both lubricated and dry environments so that they can be used in gears, slides, seal rings, washers and bearings.
